Vice is TOTALLY Mainstream

Sorry Hipsters, it seems as though another one of your precious publications has taken the leap from run-down and shabby to mainstream. The company in question is Vice Media, the publishers of Vice Magazine.

Now, I may dig myself a little ditch here by bring up my familiarity with the magazine... but oh well. When I worked at American Apparel (yeah... more like a grave than a ditch - I'M SORRY!!) we had to lay out all the free copies of Vice monthly. And those suckers were snatched up in the blink of any eye! Then again, I was working in Brooklyn... an American Apparel in Brooklyn. Free copies of Vice didn't stand a chance. Regardless, I often read the magazine because it was free and available. Between spreads of half clothed women and what appeared to be the GREASIEST party photos ever, I found some worthwhile reads. Two favorites of mine:
  1. The Eyes Have it - girls talking about what it's like to wear the Niqab
  2. Hock Talk - read all about pawn shops in different cities... some really weird stories there
But, now... it's going to be a much different magazine.

The DIY media company has recently signed a deal in the “high eight figures” with some corporate media giants. Vice was considered the Hipster bible of sorts, it took itself too seriously but that was OK because every one knew it was just this tiny magazine. And now some desperate people with a ton of cash are going to give two self proclaimed Hipsters A BOATLOAD of money to legitimize their magazine?! Oh dear lord.

I fear powerful Hipsters... it's all fine and dandy when they're impoverished in Williamsburg lofts or being pretentious about some "scene" that in NO way affects my every day life... but if you start messing with my news... someone might get slapped.

Oh, and don't worry - Vice is determined to still keep it's indie-fresh feel and following:
“We’ve been having that same question for 15 years,” said Shane Smith, co-founder of Vice. “‘Cool’ is, by definition, small. But what happens when you’re not small? We don’t really care if we’re cool, we just want to make the best content in the world. All we care about is if we made a great magazine, a great video, if we had a great party. Nothing else matters.”

I just hope they know that part of being big means there are a lot more rules and promises you made to people to get the money and the cred. That's why news giants can't say whatever they want to say - people own you now and if you think they're going to accept whatever melodramatic news coverage you want. You have another thing coming.

God save the press,
